Patients at Narayanganj General Hospital have been facing difficulties as the hospital’s X-ray department has remained closed for nearly six months due to a shortage of staff.

The service has been suspended since the death of the department’s lone medical technologist on Jan 5, forcing patients to undergo X-ray examinations at private diagnostic centres at their own expense.

Hospital authorities said more than 2,000 patients visit the hospital daily, while around 120 are admitted each day, making the prolonged suspension of the service a major inconvenience.

Resident Medical Officer Dr Md Zahirul Islam said efforts are underway to temporarily assign a medical technologist from an upazila hospital for two days a week. However, he noted that implementation remains uncertain because of a nationwide shortage of skilled personnel.

Hospital Superintendent and Civil Surgeon Dr Abul Fazal Muhammad Mushiur Rahman said the Health Directorate had been informed repeatedly about the vacancy and had assured that a medical technologist would be appointed soon.
