Education officer accused of bias in probe into teacher’s alleged fake certificate

Lakshmipur District Education Officer Gautam Chandra Mitra has been accused of bias in an investigation into allegations that a school headmaster secured his job using a fake B.Ed certificate.

Ibrahim Khalil, general secretary of the Sadar Upazila Teachers’ Association, confirmed the matter on Thursday (August 6). He had earlier filed a complaint with the deputy commissioner seeking a judicial investigation.

According to the complaint, Mohammad Kamal Hossain, headmaster of Munsur Ahmed High School, used a B.Ed certificate allegedly issued by the National University to secure his appointment in 2018.

The National University reportedly verified the certificate on December 10, 2025, and found the result to be a failure.

The deputy commissioner subsequently directed District Education Officer Gautam Chandra Mitra to investigate the allegation. Ibrahim alleged that the officer instead investigated a certificate from an institution named ‘The University of Comilla’, which was not the certificate used for Kamal’s appointment.

Kamal said the investigation had been completed and declined to comment further.

Gautam Chandra said he had submitted the report and confirmed that Kamal did not have a B.Ed certificate from the National University.

“I asked him for the original certificate. He gave me a certificate from the ‘University of Comilla’ institution. However, I did not investigate the certificate with which Kamal became the headmaster,” he said.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Mejbaul Alam Bhuiyan said he was unaware of the objection to the report but added that the matter would be investigated.
