The government has decided to increase the foodgrain security stock to 1.4 million metric tonnes during normal times and 1.5 million tonnes during disasters.

It has also decided to expand the nutritious rice distribution programme to 300 upazilas, including the existing 256, to strengthen food and nutrition security.

The decisions were taken at a meeting of the Food Planning and Management Committee (FPMC), chaired by Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed at the Home Ministry on Thursday (August 6).

The meeting was informed that 990,000 tonnes of rice will be distributed among 5.5 million poor and extremely poor rural families under the government's food-friendly programme in the 2026-27 fiscal year. Each family will receive 30kg of rice per month at Tk15 per kg for six months.

Six types of vitamin- and mineral-fortified rice will also be distributed in 300 upazilas under the programme.

The committee also decided to increase government foodgrain storage capacity by 3 million tonnes by 2030 and construct new warehouses in the three hill districts to ensure uninterrupted supply during disasters and emergencies.
