Bangladesh police warn against disinformation

Bangladesh Police on Friday urged the public to remain vigilant against what it described as a coordinated campaign of misinformation and propaganda targeting senior police officers and other key state officials on social media, warning that legal action will be taken against those responsible for spreading false and provocative content.

In a statement issued on Friday, Assistant Inspector General (Media and Public Relations) at Police Headquarters, AHM Shahadat Hossain, said a "vested quarter" has been deliberately spreading false, fabricated, misleading and provocative information about senior police officials and other important government figures through Facebook and other social media platforms.

The Bangladesh Police strongly condemned and protested what it called the ongoing disinformation campaign.

According to the statement, "fallen fascist forces" and their local and foreign associates appear to be attempting to create public confusion, destabilise the law and order situation, undermine the morale of the police force and damage the government's image through such propaganda.

The statement further claimed that certain groups have become dissatisfied because police are taking firm legal action against the activities of a banned political party and are refusing to entertain any unlawful influence or lobbying. As a result, these groups are allegedly resorting to spreading fabricated information and misinformation.

Police urged the public not to believe, share or circulate misleading and provocative content disseminated through social media. Citizens were also encouraged to play a responsible role in preventing rumours and countering misinformation.

The Police Headquarters warned that if such propaganda continues, strict legal action will be taken against those involved under the country's existing laws.

The statement added that the police are carrying out their duties with professionalism, dedication and determination to maintain law and order and ensure public safety. It also called on the public to remain vigilant and cooperate in preventing misinformation from affecting the morale of the police force or hindering its professional responsibilities.
