Jamaat-e-Islami to stay out of Bangladesh Presidential Election

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will not field a candidate in the upcoming presidential election, saying it has no realistic chance of securing the presidency due to its lack of a parliamentary majority, senior party leaders said.

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has decided not to nominate a candidate for the upcoming presidential election, citing the current parliamentary arithmetic under which the president is elected by members of parliament.

Speaking to BBC Bangla, Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar said that under the existing Constitution, the president is elected through a vote of lawmakers. As the ruling Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) holds an overwhelming majority in parliament, its nominee is expected to be elected, making it impractical for Jamaat to contest the election.

However, Parwar criticised the BNP, alleging that the ruling party did not consult or hold discussions with opposition parties regarding the nomination for the country's highest constitutional office.

The Election Commission has already announced the schedule for the presidential election. Nomination papers will be accepted on Aug. 13 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., while scrutiny of nominations will take place on Aug. 16. The deadline for withdrawal of candidatures is Aug. 18.

If more than one valid candidate remains after scrutiny, voting will be held in the Jatiya Sangsad (National Parliament) chamber on Aug. 20 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The Election Commission said that if only one valid candidate remains after the scrutiny process, no vote will be required and that candidate will be declared elected unopposed. If multiple valid candidates are in the race, members of parliament will elect the president in accordance with the Constitution and relevant laws.
