‘Mecho Bagh’ sighted after 50yrs in Pekua

Local residents reported seeing an endangered Mecho Bagh (wild cat) in the Dargah Mura area of Taitong Union in Pekua upazila, Cox’s Bazar, after nearly 50 years.

The sighting of the animal near a densely populated area on Thursday evening has caused panic among local residents.

A local resident named Habib said the animal likely ventured into the human settlement near the Dargah Mura graveyard from the adjacent hilly forest in search of food. Upon spotting the animal, several residents raised an alarm, prompting a crowd to gather at the scene.

Sensing the presence and noise of the crowd, the animal quickly fled back into the nearby forest. Panic has persisted in the area since the incident.

Locals claimed that such a wild animal has not been seen in the Taitong area for almost 50 years. "We heard stories from our elders about various wild animals living in the hills of Taitong, but we have never seen a tiger or leopard ourselves," residents said.

However, whether the spotted animal is an endangered fishing cat, a jungle cat, or a leopard has not yet been confirmed by the Forest Department.

Local residents have called on Forest Department officials to inspect the site, identify the species, take necessary precautions, and issue safety guidelines for the community.

When contacted, Taitong Forest Beat Officer Abdul Motalib Al Mumin said, "I have not heard about such an incident yet. I am looking into the matter."
