King Hilsa caught in Char Fasson, sold for Tk 14,000

A giant "King Hilsa" weighing 2.6 kg was caught in the nets of fishermen at the estuary of the Meghna River and the Bay of Bengal in Char Fasson upazila.

The fish was later brought to the Anjurhat Bakshi Fish Landing Center in Char Fasson, where it was sold at an auction for Tk 14,000.

Large sized Hilsa fish are locally referred to as “King Hilsa” by coastal fishermen and fish traders.

According to sources at the Bakshi Fish Landing Center, fisherman Nasir Majhi and his crew were fishing in the waters near Shivchar at the river estuary. The massive Hilsa was caught in their net along with other smaller fish on Thursday afternoon (August 6).

The fishermen brought the fish to the Saaj Fish Arat at the landing center on Friday morning (August 7).

Mahfuz Porosh, a local fish trader, said the fish was put up for open auction in front of local wholesalers and buyers. Arat owner Moakbar purchased the fish as the highest bidder for Tk 14,000.

"There is high demand for large-sized Hilsa in Dhaka's wholesale market," said Akbar. "We will dispatch this fish to Dhaka along with other crates of Hilsa, where it will yield a better profit."

He added that overall fish prices remain slightly high in the market due to a lower supply of Hilsa.
