NANDAIL, MYMENSINGH, Aug 9: A safety girder collapse has turned a bridge adjacent to Kaliapara Bazar in Ward No. 2 of Moazzempur Union in Nandail Upazila of the district into a death trap. As a result, traffic has been running at risk for a long time.

According to local sources, the safety girder on the west side of the bridge built over the flowing Mogha River adjacent to Kaliapara Bazar was being broken little by little for a long time. The girder completely broke last 20-25 days ago.

Local resident Sujan Mia said that a day or two before the last football world cup final, the security guard on the western side suddenly collapsed and fell into the river, as a result of which hundreds of pedestrians and vehicles are moving at risk every day.

Bulbul, another local resident, said that it is an important road from Kanurampur Bazar adjacent to Kishoreganj-Mymensingh highway to Kaliapara Bazar, Sangramkhali Bazar, Ekota Bazar, Kharua and Dewanganj Bazar, where hundreds of easy bikes, trucks, motorcycles and other vehicles move. Hundreds of students are also facing difficulty to walk to the local Kaliapara Bazar, Bahadurpur High School and Bahadurpur Primary School.

The lack of safety girders on one side of the bridge can lead to major accidents at any time. So the locals demanded to repair it quickly.

In this connection, Nandail Upazila Engineer Golam Kibria said that the matter is not known and action will be taken on inquiry.
