A clash broke out between workers of Jamaat-e-Islami and Jubo League activists in Chatkhil, Noakhali, At least 11 people were injured in clashes between the two sides.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon in Hatpukuria Union of the upazila. In the first round of the incident, former coordinator of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and Jamaat-e-Islami worker Samir Hossain, 25, was beaten. He alleged that they came under attack while returning after filing a complaint with the police station.
Jamaat leaders blamed local activists of Jubo League, Jubo Dal, and Chhatra Dal for the attacks.
According to sources familiar with the incident, Jamaat-e-Islami worker Samir Hossain had been involved in a long-standing dispute with some Jubo League activists over various issues. Against this backdrop, he was allegedly assaulted at around 5 p.m. on Sunday in front of Hatpukuria School.
In the attack, Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir activists Samir Hossain, Robiul Hossain, 34, Shahin Alam, 26, Md. Sujon, 30, and Ripat Islam, 23, were injured.
When leaders and activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir protested the incident, an argument broke out between them and activists of Jubo League, Jubo Dal, and Chhatra Dal.
Mohiuddin Hasan, amir of the upazila Jamaat-e-Islami, alleged that Samir was beaten in the first incident under the leadership of local Jubo League activists Md. Sohag and Hachhan Patwari. Later, they went to the police station with other party activists to file a complaint.
He said that while returning from the police station at around 9:00 PM they were attacked again in front of the police station by Jubo League activists. Some activists of Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal were also seen among the attackers.
However, an unnamed source from the Jubo League claimed that six of its activists were injured in an attack by Jamaat activists. The source identified Sohag and Hachhan Patwari among the injured but said the names and addresses of the others were not known.
The injured individuals from both sides were admitted to Chatkhil Upazila Health Complex and several private hospitals.
No statement could be obtained from any Jubo Dal leader or activist regarding the incident. When contacted, Farid Ahmed, joint convener of the upazila BNP, said he was in a meeting and would comment later.
Mohiuddin Hasan, the upazila amir of Jamaat-e-Islami, said that a written complaint had been submitted to the police station on behalf of his party.
Chatkhil Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Monnaf said that two complaints had been submitted on behalf of Jubo Dal and BNP, but they later withdrew the complaints.
