A Dhaka court on Tuesday acquitted Md Abdur Rahim in a case filed over the murder of his wife, Ferdousi Akter Mery, in Mohammadpur in 2014.

Dhaka’s 5th Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge Elina Akter pronounced the verdict in the presence of Rahim, who was brought to court from jail.

According to the case documents, Rahim allegedly assaulted and restrained Mery following an argument at their Mohammadpur home on November 29, 2014. Her body was found on the bed the following morning.

Mery’s mother, Hasina Begum, later filed a murder case against Rahim and his parents. Police initially submitted a final report recommending their discharge. Following a no-confidence petition, the court ordered a CID investigation, which subsequently charged Rahim while recommending the discharge of his parents.

The trial began in 2017, with 13 prosecution witnesses testifying. Rahim denied the allegations and produced three defence witnesses.

The prosecution expressed dissatisfaction with the verdict. State prosecutor Shariful Islam Liton said they would appeal against the acquittal.
