PM heads to New York at Dawn for UNGA summit

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is scheduled to leave Dhaka early Monday for New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where he will deliver his maiden address as head of government.

The prime minister is scheduled to depart from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 5:50 AM on Monday (September 21) early morning and travel to New York via Istanbul, according to officials.

During his visit, Tarique Rahman will outline Bangladesh’s renewed democratic journey and the government’s positions on key national and global challenges.

He is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 24, with his speech expected to focus on democracy, the rule of law, accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development and economic cooperation.

The prime minister will also highlight the Rohingya crisis and seek stronger international support for the repatriation of forcibly displaced Rohingyas to Myanmar.

His official engagements will begin on September 22, including meetings with world leaders and participation in high-level events on climate action, global inequality and other international issues.

The visit will also include bilateral meetings with several foreign leaders and discussions on trade, investment, development cooperation and the Rohingya crisis.

The prime minister is scheduled to leave New York for Bangladesh on the night of September 25.
