PM off to US

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman left Dhaka for New York on Monday morning to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He departed Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at around 5:45 AM on a Turkish Airlines flight. His wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, is accompanying him on the trip.

Several cabinet members, political figures, senior government officials and personal staff are also part of the prime minister’s delegation.

Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam said, "reporters that the prime minister will address the UN General Debate on September 24. His speech will focus on Bangladesh’s new democratic journey, establishing the rule of law and accountability, global peace and security, climate change, sustainable development, economic cooperation, equitable use of modern technology and the need to reform the multilateral system."

According to the foreign secretary, the prime minister’s schedule in New York has been kept brief but meaningful. During the visit, he will attend five high-level meetings focusing on Bangladesh’s democratic transition, good governance and a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.

Bangladesh will also host two special side events on the sidelines of the UNGA.

Diplomatic analysts say this is the government’s first direct participation at the UN’s highest global forum, providing an opportunity to present its political commitments and vision for Bangladesh to the international community.

This year, Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister is serving as president of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, which has further raised Bangladesh’s profile in global diplomacy.
