Stop Encroachment on Foot Overbridges

Published : Friday, 14 August, 2026 at 12:00 AM
Letter To the Editor
Dear Sir,
Foot overbridges are essential facilities for helping pedestrians cross busy roads safely. However, many of these bridges are increasingly being occupied by shops, product displays and temporary vendors, leaving nearly half of the available space blocked. As a result, facilities built for safe pedestrian movement are turning into narrow passages and causing further public inconvenience.
The reduced walking space creates congestion, pushing and a greater risk of accidents. The situation is particularly difficult for women, elderly people, children and persons with disabilities, who need sufficient space to move safely and comfortably.
Therefore, the authorities should take immediate and effective measures to stop such encroachments. Regular monitoring and strict enforcement are necessary to prevent vendors and shops from occupying pedestrian spaces. Foot overbridges should remain free from commercial activities so that people can use them safely and conveniently.
