Th party decided to nominate its Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir for the country's 23rd presidential post. Following the nomination, he resigned as the party's Secretary General and Standing Committee member.
The decision to name Mirza Fakhrul as the presidential candidate came during an emergency meeting of top BNP leaders chaired by Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat on Thursday (August 13).
Party Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi confirmed the matter to journalists after the meeting.
He stated that Mirza Fakhrul resigned from his position as party Secretary General and Standing Committee member after receiving the presidential nomination.
Earlier around 9:00 AM, the emergency meeting commenced at the Secretariat under the chairmanship of Prime Minister and BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. Senior leaders attended the meeting where Mirza Fakhrul's nomination was finalized.
The 23rd presidential election of the country is scheduled for August 20. According to the Election Commission schedule, Thursday is the deadline for submitting nomination papers. Verification of nominations will occur on August 16, and the last date for withdrawal of candidature is August 18.
If Mirza Fakhrul is elected president, the position of BNP Secretary General will become vacant. Discussions have already begun within the party regarding his successor, with Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi and Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed among the potential candidates.
