Auto-rickshaw charging triggers midnight power crisis, says Minister

The minister made the remarks in the capital on Thursday (August 13).

The energy minister said unauthorized auto-rickshaws created an additional power demand that did not exist previously. He noted that officials face attacks when trying to disconnect illegal power connections.  

He added that midnight power demand is rising abnormally across the country due to battery auto-rickshaw charging. Most of these vehicles use illegal electrical connections, and the government is working to prevent them.  

The minister further stated that an LNG FSRU unit was ordered 10-12 days ago, with plans to add three more by 2029. He acknowledged ongoing power and gas shortages in the industrial sector, assuring that the government is trying to resolve them. 

 

He also announced initiatives to establish another LNG terminal in the Mongla-Hiron Point area.
