Gunfight with DB police in Badda leaves suspected robber injured, arms recovered

A suspected robber was shot and injured in a gunfight with Detective Branch (DB) police in the Aftabnagar area of the capital’s Badda on Thursday night. Police later arrested him and recovered a pistol and three rounds of ammunition from his possession.

The incident took place at around 8:45pm in the East End Housing area of M Block, Sector 5, in Aftabnagar.

According to police, a DB team launched an operation in the area around 8:30pm following a tip-off that a group of armed robbers was preparing to carry out a robbery.

Inspector Anwar of Gulshan DB said the suspected robber, identified as Md SM Ariful Islam Pavel, 30, opened fire at the police after sensing their presence. In response, the DB team fired one round from a shotgun in self-defence, hitting Pavel below his right knee.

Police subsequently detained him and recovered a pistol and three rounds of ammunition from his possession.

Pavel was taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) at around 10pm. He is currently undergoing treatment there.

Pavel is the son of Abu Sadeque Sardar Badal of Bakerganj village in Gafargaon upazila of Mymensingh. He had been living in the Goran area of Khilgaon in Dhaka.

Police said legal proceedings, including the filing of a case with Badda Police Station, are underway.
