Nomination papers for presidential election to be scrutinised Sunday

The Election Commission will scrutinise the three nomination papers submitted for the upcoming presidential election on Sunday (August 16), with one nomination paper filed for BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and two for 11-party alliance candidate Col (retd) Oli Ahmed.

The nomination papers were submitted to the Election Commission ahead of the deadline on Thursday. EC Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed confirmed the development after the nomination submission period ended.

“Scrutiny of the nomination papers will begin at 10am on Sunday. A representative from the Parliament Secretariat will be present to verify the signatures of the lawmakers who nominated the candidates,” the EC secretary said.

Regarding the submission of two nomination papers by Oli Ahmed, Akhtar Ahmed said the second one would be scrutinised if necessary after the first is examined.

According to the election schedule, August 18 is the last date for withdrawing nominations. The presidential election is scheduled to be held on August 20. This will be the first presidential election requiring a direct vote since 1991.
