Iran tells Trump Strait of Hormuz cannot be seized by ‘tweet or warship’

Iran has rejected US President Donald Trump’s claim that he would declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory after defeating Iran, saying the strategic waterway cannot be seized through social media posts, warships or political statements.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi made the remarks on Saturday (August 15), responding to Trump’s comments at a rally.

“Trump said that after defeating Iran, he would declare Hormuz US territory. Hormuz cannot be seized by a tweet, a warship or an order. It cannot be seized even through political statements,” Gharibabadi said.

Addressing Trump, he urged the US president to accept what he called the reality of Iran’s position and accused him of facing a “strategic and devastating defeat”.

Trump said at a rally on Friday night that after defeating Iran, he would soon declare the Strait of Hormuz US territory.

He also said Americans should accept slightly higher fuel prices for a short period to defeat what he described as a “bad country” like Iran.
