Two planes in the sky with the same flight number, narrowly avoiding a terrible accident

Two American Airlines planes flying with the same flight number narrowly avoided a collision in Phoenix, USA. Thankfully, the passengers on both planes were able to avoid a potentially fatal accident by detecting the problem in time and taking quick action.
The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Friday in the airspace of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. One plane was landing in Phoenix from Chicago, and the other was taking off from Phoenix to Chicago. Of note was that the two planes were operating at the same time with the same flight number, as American Airlines Flight 2482.
Normally, the same flight number on the Chicago-Phoenix route operates at different times. But due to the weather, the flight from Chicago was delayed, so the two planes took off at the same time.
Another flight from Phoenix to Chicago took off on time, so, the two planes briefly passed over the same airspace. Realizing this, the Phoenix air traffic controller quickly arranged to separate the two planes. They referred to one plane as ‘Americana 2482 on the arrival’ and the other as ‘Americana 2482 on the departure’. This helped the pilots understand which command was being given to which plane.
The controller kept the landing plane at a safe altitude above the departing plane. At the same time, he also instructed the plane departing from Phoenix not to go too high, maintaining the necessary vertical distance between the two planes. After the two flights safely passed each other, the pilot of the landing plane praised the air traffic controller for his skill. The controller commented that the situation could have been worse, but in the end, everything turned out fine.
The air traffic controller, who has been in this job for nearly 25 years, said he had never seen two planes with the same callsign approach each other at the same time. Aviation experts also said that such a mistake is extremely rare.
According to aviation safety expert Steve Arrowe, it is likely that no one at the airline dispatch center would have anticipated that two planes with the same flight number would be in the sky at the same time. He said that such a mistake should not have happened. The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and American Airlines have launched an
investigation into the incident.
The airline said that due to the vigilance and professionalism of the air traffic controllers and pilots, the required safe distance was always maintained, and both flights flew safely without any accidents.
The incident also brought to the fore the importance of correct flight number and callsign management in aviation, to avoid further confusion and a repeat incident in the future.
