Khaleda Zia Gold Cup Chess Tournament announced 

 
A new chapter could soon be added to Narayanganj's chess landscape, with the announcement of a Khaleda Zia Gold Cup Chess Tournament in memory of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia.

Advocate Md Abu Al Yusuf Khan Tipu, member secretary of Narayanganj Metropolitan BNP, made the announcement on Saturday at the prize-giving ceremony of the Narayanganj Chess Academy FIDE International Rating Chess Tournament. He said the proposed event would be staged within the next two months.

The announcement came as the curtain fell on the two-day international rating tournament at the auditorium of Narayanganj Cambrian School and College.

India's Amateur FIDE Master Sourav Choubey stole the show, finishing as the unbeaten champion with a perfect five points from five rounds. Candidate Master Abhik Sarkar took the runners-up spot with 3.5 points after the tie-break, while Candidate Master Sohel Chowdhury and Muhtadi Tajwar Nashid, also on 3.5 points, finished third and fourth respectively.

A total of 20 players from India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh took part in the five-round Swiss League competition, with prize money handed to the leading finishers.

Former Bangladesh Chess Federation joint secretary Morsalin Ahmed attended the prize-giving ceremony as special guest, while Narayanganj Chess Academy president Mehedi Hasan Mishu chaired the event. Former federation vice-president Md Jahangir Islam delivered the welcome address, with FIDE arbiter Mohammad Shamim conducting proceedings.

The successful tournament, coupled with the new Gold Cup announcement, has breathed fresh life into Narayanganj's chess community.
