English and Mathematics Need Better Teaching

Letter To the Editor
Dear Sir,

The high failure rates in English and Mathematics in this year’s SSC and equivalent examinations point to a deeper problem in our education system. Every year, these subjects tend to record among the lowest pass rates. English is essential for higher education, employment, global communication and access to information, while Mathematics develops logical and analytical thinking needed in science, technology, economics and everyday life.

Students’ fear of these subjects often stems from rote learning, uninspiring teaching methods and a shortage of skilled teachers. Repeated mistakes can gradually erode confidence and make students reluctant to learn.

Therefore, we need more practical and engaging teaching methods. Schools should ensure skilled teachers, regular training and additional support for struggling students. Practical English and real-life applications of Mathematics can also make learning more accessible. Technology and assessment should promote understanding rather than memorisation. Most importantly, students need encouragement and guidance, rather than criticism, to overcome their fears and become confident learners.
