Passengers on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight from Kathmandu to Dhaka had to wait nearly seven hours on Sunday after the flight was cancelled due to a technical problem.
The 127 passengers were eventually brought back to Dhaka on a larger replacement aircraft, which landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12:10am on Monday.
Flight BG-372 was scheduled to leave Kathmandu for Dhaka at 4pm on Sunday. After the aircraft left the terminal and was heading towards the runway, a technical problem was detected and it was brought back to the terminal.
Passenger SM Nuruzzaman said the passengers were informed about the technical problem shortly before the aircraft reached the runway. They were then asked to disembark and wait at the terminal.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ Kathmandu Country Manager Babul Akter said passengers were taken off the aircraft after the technical problem was detected. At the time, it was not possible to determine how long repairs would take, he said.
Business-class passengers were given access to the lounge, while other passengers were provided with facilities according to airline procedures, he added.
Biman later arranged a replacement aircraft to bring the stranded passengers back to Bangladesh. According to the airline’s general manager of public relations, the larger aircraft left Dhaka for Kathmandu at 10pm and subsequently brought all 127 passengers back.
The replacement flight landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 12:10am.
