Australia could face a significant financial penalty and a deduction of World Test Championship points after losing the first Test to Bangladesh in Darwin by nine wickets.

Pat Cummins’ side was found guilty of maintaining a slow over rate after bowling 86 overs on the third day, four short of the minimum 90 overs required in a Test.

Under ICC rules, teams are required to bowl at least 15 overs per hour. For every over short, players can be fined five per cent of their match fee and their team can also lose one World Test Championship point.

Australian players receive A$20,000 per Test. If the four-over shortfall is upheld, each player could be fined A$4,000, meaning the 11 players could collectively face a fine of A$44,000, equivalent to around Tk 3.84 million.

Australia could also lose four World Test Championship points. They currently lead the standings with 84 points and a points percentage of 77.78. A four-point deduction would reduce their total to 80, although their points percentage would remain unchanged.

However, the match referee will consider factors including the weather and loss of playing time due to wickets before deciding whether to impose the penalty.

Australia had previously escaped similar penalties during the last Ashes series under an ICC provision that does not apply if a team bats for at least 80 overs in an innings or is bowled out twice within 160 overs.

Australia lost four World Test Championship points for a slow over rate in the 2020 Boxing Day Test, a deduction that contributed to their failure to qualify for the 2021 Championship final.
