UN Rights Chief calls for independent oversight of Bangladesh law enforcement

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for the establishment of a strong and independent national institution to oversee Bangladesh’s law enforcement agencies and ensure accountability.

Speaking on Monday at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva during a discussion on the global human rights situation, Türk stressed the need for effective oversight of the country’s security forces.

''Independent institutions are needed to ensure effective oversight and accountability for the work of law enforcement agencies,'' Türk said, referring to Bangladesh.

The UN human rights office had earlier issued a report on human rights violations during the July-August 2024 protests in Bangladesh, making 44 recommendations. The recommendations included independent investigations into allegations against security forces, stronger civilian oversight and greater powers for the National Human Rights Commission.

Türk also said his office would continue working with governments in countries across the world, including those in Central Asia, to promote inclusive social and economic policies that deliver benefits for all.
