Remains of at least 10 horses, including heads, hides, legs, intestines and bones, were recovered from a forested area in Sreepur, Gazipur, on Monday morning.
The remains were found in Mudipara, near the border of Barami and Gosinga unions, along the Karnapur-Barami regional road. Locals discovered them while cutting grass and later informed the authorities.
Local residents said the horse remains were scattered along a footpath leading into the forest, suggesting that the animals may have been slaughtered there and their meat taken away.
Suman Pradhan, a member of Ward 1 of Gosinga Union Parishad, said 10 to 12 horses may have been slaughtered there sometime during the previous night.
Sreepur Upazila Livestock Officer Dr Md Ashraf Hossain said 12 horse heads had been recovered from the site, which is about two kilometres from the nearest houses.
“We suspect a group slaughtered the horses there and took away the meat, leaving the remains behind. We are trying to identify who took the meat, where it was taken and who the buyers are,” he said.
The remains will be buried and legal action will be taken, he added.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Shahinur Alam said police were sent to the spot after receiving the report and the matter was being investigated.
