The government is planning major changes to the admission process for Class XI this year, including accepting applications in a single phase, instead of three and scrapping the existing migration or college-change facility.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the Class XI Admission Policy Committee comprising officials from the Education Ministry, education boards and experts from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) on August 16.

Under the proposed system, students who have passed the SSC and equivalent examinations will get only one opportunity to apply for admission online.

As there will be no subsequent application phases, the existing migration facility will also be discontinued.

However, students whose results change following scrutiny or re-evaluation of their examination scripts will be given another opportunity to apply. Students who miss the initial application, fail to confirm their admission, or are not allocated a college will also get another chance.

The ministry is also planning to complete the entire admission process within September and begin Class XI lessons in the final week of the month. Students who change colleges after re-evaluation of their results are expected to begin classes by October 1.

The initial proposal of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee was to open online applications on September 15, complete admissions by November 10 and start classes on November 12.

The Education Ministry, however, did not approve the proposal and instructed the authorities to bring the admission schedule forward.

Professor Syed Akhtaruzzaman, president of the Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee and chairman of the Dhaka Education Board, said work on the admission policy is underway and is expected to be finalised by Thursday.

He said the proposed changes aim to restore discipline to academic activities by bringing forward the admission process and the start of classes. The final policy will be issued by the Education Ministry after reviewing the proposal.
