The newly appointed Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Justice AKM Asaduzzaman has pledged to work independently and without political influence, saying the commission will make every effort to meet the expectations of the country’s 180 million people and restore public confidence in the anti-graft body.

“InshaAllah, we are not under any pressure. We are working independently,” he said in response to a query whether the ACC would be able to work independently despite criticism that it had failed to remain free from political influence under past elected governments.

The new commission, headed by the retired Appellate Division judge, began its official activities on Wednesday after the ACC remained without leadership for 166 days.

Asaduzzaman, along with commissioners Dr Jahangir Alam Khan and Dr Sajjad Hossain Bhuiyan, arrived at the ACC headquarters in the morning and attended an introductory meeting with senior officials at around 10am.
