The country will launch a nationwide preventive oral cholera vaccination campaign on August 22, with a target of providing vaccines to 5.175 million people in 14 high-risk upazilas and police stations.
The first dose will be administered from August 22 to September 21, while the second dose will be given from September 26 to October 25.
Two doses, administered 14 days apart, will be required for full protection.
Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Hossain formally inaugurated the 'Preventive Oral Cholera Vaccination Campaign-2026' at a press conference held at the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) auditorium on Thursday.
Under the campaign, all citizens aged one year and above, except pregnant women, will receive the oral cholera vaccine free of charge from 8AM to 5PM.
In DSCC areas, vaccination will be conducted at 192 centres across 17 wards in Lalbagh, Gendaria, Kadamtali and Kamrangirchar police stations, targeting around 1.17 million people.
The campaign will also cover designated areas under Dhaka North City Corporation, including Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Khilkhet and Tejgaon, as well as selected areas of Munshiganj, Kishoreganj, Narayanganj and Brahmanbaria districts.
Speaking at the event, the Health Minister said cholera had historically caused devastating outbreaks in Bangladesh, but continued vigilance was necessary despite significant progress in controlling the disease.
