Buriganga boat race celebrates Dhaka’s 416th anniversary

Published : Saturday, 22 August, 2026 at 12:00 AM
The Buriganga River came alive on Friday as traditional boat racing was held to mark the 416th anniversary of Dhaka, drawing large crowds to both banks of the river.

Organised by Dhaka South City Corporation, the event attracted people of all ages, including women, men, children and teenagers, who gathered along the riverbanks, nearby roads and other vantage points to enjoy the centuries-old tradition.

The enthusiastic turnout reflected the enduring popularity of boat racing among Dhaka residents. Many spectators, however, expressed disappointment over the event’s management.

During the race, other boats, steamers and passenger vessels continued moving through the river alongside the competing boats. The lack of proper control over river traffic made it difficult for many spectators to identify when the main race had started or when the competition was actually taking place. Despite the organisational shortcomings, the large turnout and spontaneous enthusiasm demonstrated that traditional events such as the Buriganga boat race still hold a strong place in the city’s cultural life.

Better control of river traffic, designated viewing areas and clearer scheduling could make future editions more organised, vibrant and enjoyable for spectators. "UNB
