Low pressure in Bay, 5-days of rain expected

A low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal is strengthening the monsoon over the country, with the country likely to experience rain and thunderstorms for the next five days, according to the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD).

The weather office issued the forecast for 120 hours from 6PM on Sunday (August 23), warning that several parts of the country could see moderate to heavy rainfall during the period.

A low-pressure area has formed over the northwestern Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas. Meanwhile, the axis of the monsoon trough extends from Rajasthan through Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and central Bangladesh to Assam.

The monsoon is currently fairly active over Bangladesh, the Meteorological Department said.

Rain likely across major divisions

From 6PM Sunday to 6PM Monday, many areas of Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are likely to receive rain or thundershowers. Some areas of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions may also experience temporary gusty winds accompanied by light to moderate rain or thunderstorms.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is possible in places across Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions. Daytime and nighttime temperatures may fall slightly nationwide during this period.

Rain to continue through Tuesday

From Monday evening to Tuesday evening, many parts of Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions may receive rain, while some areas of Rajshahi, Mymensingh and Dhaka divisions could also see showers.

Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in some areas, while temperatures are expected to rise slightly during the day and at night.

More rain and thunderstorms on Wednesday

From Tuesday evening to Wednesday evening, many areas of Rangpur, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are expected to experience light to moderate rain or thunderstorms.

Some areas may receive moderate to heavy rainfall, while temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged nationwide.

Rain forecast through Thursday

From Wednesday evening to Thursday evening, many areas of Rangpur, Barishal and Sylhet divisions may receive rain or thunderstorms. Some areas of Rajshahi, Khulna, Mymensingh and Dhaka divisions may also experience showers.

Temperatures could rise slightly, with moderate to heavy rainfall possible in some areas.

The forecast for Thursday evening to Friday evening also indicates rain in many areas of Rangpur, Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, with scattered showers possible in Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna and Barishal divisions.

Temperatures may rise slightly on Thursday, while some parts of the country could again experience moderate to heavy rainfall.
