A van driver was electrocuted and killed while working to repair a rural electricity line in Shreepur upazila of Magura.
The accident occurred at around 2:00 PM on Thursday (August 27) in Kalyanpur village of Dariapur Union under Shreepur upazila.
The deceased was identified as Mahfuzar Khan son of Amzad Khan of Sarangdia village in Shreepur upazila. He was a day-laborer van driver by profession at the Rural Electricity office.
According to locals, Mahfuzar was working on repairing the electricity line after climbing an electric pole when he came into contact with electricity and sustained critical injuries. Local residents rescued him and took him to Shreepur Upazila Health Complex, where the attending doctor declared him dead.
However, Mohammad Shamim Uddin, Deputy General Manager (DGM) of the Rural Electricity Shreepur Zonal Office, said, “Mahfuzar Khan was employed as a day-laborer van driver. We did not assign him any such work. We are forming an investigation committee to determine why he went to repair the electricity line and who made him climb the pole. Necessary action will be taken after the investigation.”
Oli Mia, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Shreepur Police Station said, "they had received information about the death of a person due to electrocution. The body has been kept at the morgue of Shreepur Upazila Health Complex. Legal proceedings are underway in connection with the incident.
Details of how the accident occurred, who made Mahfuzar climb the electricity pole, and whether adequate safety measures were taken during the work will be known after the investigation.
