Joanne Hicks becomes oldest bowler to take five wickets

Isle of Man spinner Joanne Hicks has set a world record as the oldest bowler in international cricket to take a five-wicket haul.

Hicks achieved the feat at the age of 51 years and 173 days, becoming the first bowler in international cricket to take five wickets in an innings after turning 50.

The Isle of Man defeated Greece in a women's T20 match at the Moara Vlasiei Cricket Ground in Romania. Hicks returned figures of 5-10 as Greece were bowled out for 52 in 15 overs.

The Isle of Man then chased down the target with nine wickets in hand during the powerplay.

Hicks broke a record that had stood for 96 years. Australia's Bert Ironmonger was previously the oldest cricketer to take a five-wicket haul in international cricket, achieving the feat at the age of 49 years and 314 days against South Africa in 1932.

Ironmonger took 5-6 and 6-18 in the same Test, helping Australia dismiss South Africa for 36 and 45 in reply to 153.

Hicks had previously set the record for the oldest woman to take a five-wicket haul in international cricket. In 2024, she recorded two five-wicket hauls against Greece and Malta within six days, achieving the feat at the age of 49 years and 168 days.
