PM orders action against unauthorised sleeper coaches

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has ordered the authorities to take necessary action against the operation of unauthorised double-decker sleeper coaches as part of a broader government effort to ease traffic congestion in the capital and restore discipline in the public transport sector.

The directive was issued at a meeting held at the Prime Minister’s Office in Tejgaon on Saturday, where the Dhaka traffic situation, pressure on major roads and flyovers, public transport management, bus terminal restructuring, parking facilities and modernisation of traffic management were discussed. Deputy Press Secretary to the Prime Minister Shahadat Swadhin briefed reporters on the decisions.

The meeting also decided to introduce Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems at toll plazas on expressways and flyovers. An app will be developed to facilitate the system, with the prime minister directing the authorities to complete its development within four months. Measures to ease congestion around the Jatrabari-Gulistan flyover were also discussed.

As part of plans to reorganise public transport in Dhaka, the Fulbaria Bus Terminal will be relocated to Keraniganj. The government will acquire the required land through the Local Government Ministry to implement the project. Since construction of a permanent terminal will take time, an interim terminal will be built on 15 acres of land in the Jhilmil project within four months.

The meeting also approved the expansion of Gabtoli Bus Terminal, relocation of the Karwan Bazar kitchen market to Gabtoli, improvements to parking facilities around the Secretariat and formulation of a separate policy for autorickshaw operations.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, Local Government State Minister Mir Shahe Alam, Pabna-5 MP Shamsur Rahman Shimul Biswas, Dhaka South City Corporation Administrator Abdus Salam, the Cabinet Secretary, the Prime Minister’s Principal Secretary and other senior officials attended the meeting.
