BNP headquarters alive again

After remaining relatively quiet for a prolonged period, Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) central headquarters in Naya Paltan is once again buzzing with leaders, activists and aspiring office-bearers, signalling renewed momentum in the ruling party’s organisational activities.

The increased footfall comes at a significant time for BNP, which is now seeking to consolidate its organisational strength after taking charge of the government and looking ahead to the next local government elections and other electoral challenges. Party leaders and activists from Dhaka and different districts are regularly gathering at the headquarters. Offices of the party’s affiliated and associate organisations are also witnessing that crowing. 

Following the February 12 national election, the number of BNP leaders and activists visiting the Naya Paltan headquarters declined significantly. The office, however, witnessed large gatherings on two occasions when Prime Minister Tarique Rahman visited the headquarters after forming the government.

The momentum did not continue for long. The office again remained relatively quiet until the election for reserved seats for women in Parliament, when Naya Paltan became busy for several days.

Party insiders said Rizvi’s presence at the headquarters had traditionally attracted large numbers of activists. Whenever word spread that he was at the office, leaders and workers from different levels would gather there. His appointment as acting Secretary General has reportedly further increased the flow of activists.

Officials responsible for the party’s central office and office assistants said activists from Dhaka as well as various districts across the country have recently begun visiting Naya Paltan more regularly. Leaders and workers of BNP’s affiliated and associate organisations are also increasingly visible at the headquarters.

They said party workers have also regained confidence after BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was nominated as president. Although the August 20 Cabinet reshuffle generated mixed reactions among party activists, they viewed the decision to give due recognition to veteran politician Dr Abdul Moin Khan positively.
