
The current world is technology-dependent. E-waste: A silent threat to agriculture, environment and human health! Every day, new mobile phones, computers, televisions, refrigerators, smart devices and electrical appliances are coming to the market. This rapid advancement in technology has not only made people’s lives easier, but has also created a new environmental crisis, “e-waste” or Electronic Waste (E-waste). This invisible danger of modern civilization has now become a cause for global concern. It is a terrible threat especially for agriculture-dependent countries, because the toxic elements of e-waste are gradually polluting the soil, water, air and food chain.
E-waste basically refers to those electrical and electronic products that are no longer usable or have been thrown away. For example, old mobile phones, broken computers, broken televisions, useless refrigerators, washing machines, batteries, chargers, electronic circuit boards, wires and various digital devices. Due to rapid changes in technology, people are buying new devices in a very short time and abandoning old devices. As a result, the amount of e-waste is constantly increasing.
Every year, millions of tons of e-waste are generated in the world. A large part of the electronic waste used in developed countries is entering various developing countries in the name of recycling. But in most cases, this waste is not processed properly. As a result, toxic chemicals are released into the environment, causing terrible pollution.
The most dangerous aspect of e-waste is the harmful heavy metals and chemical elements it contains. Such as lead, mercury, cadmium, arsenic, chromium and bromine compounds. These elements accumulate in the soil for a long time and reduce soil fertility. When this pollution spreads to agricultural land, the normal growth of crops is disrupted and toxic substances enter the human body through food grains.
The impact of e-waste on agriculture and the environment is very profound. When e-waste is burned in open areas, toxic fumes mix with the air and cause air pollution. Again, through rainwater, the chemical components of e-waste penetrate deep into the soil and pollute the groundwater. Sometimes, these wastes are dumped in rivers or canals, which causes serious damage to aquatic animals and fisheries.
This problem can be even more serious in an agriculture-dependent country like Bangladesh. Because most of the people in our country are directly or indirectly involved in agriculture. If the soil of agricultural land becomes contaminated, then food security will be threatened. The presence of toxic metals in vegetables, rice, fruits and other food products produced in contaminated soil may increase. As a result, in the long term, cancer, kidney disease, neurological problems, respiratory problems and developmental complications in children can occur in the human body.
According to experts, e-waste is not only an environmental problem; it is also an economic and social problem. Because a large amount of valuable metals are being wasted due to lack of proper management. Many electronic devices contain valuable materials like gold, silver, copper and aluminum, which can be reused through recycling. But as the environment is being polluted due to unplanned waste disposal, valuable resources are also being wasted.
Currently, e-waste management in Bangladesh is not yet sufficiently developed. In urban areas, there is a tendency to leave old electronic devices in the open, burn them or separate them in an unhygienic way. In many cases, child laborers are also involved in the risky task of separating these wastes, which is very dangerous for their health.
Lack of awareness in e-waste management is also a big problem. Many people do not know that old batteries, mobile phones or chargers should not be thrown away with general waste. As a result, these wastes accumulate in garbage dumps and cause environmental pollution. Therefore, increasing awareness among the general public is the need of the hour.
One of the most effective ways to reduce e-waste is to follow the “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” policy. That is, using unnecessary electronic products less, reusing old devices and recycling unusable devices properly. For example, a mobile phone can be repaired and used for a few more days instead of being thrown away due to a minor problem. Similarly, old computers or laptops can be given to educational institutions or poor students for use.
Recycling is the most important step in e-waste management. It is possible to separate and reuse valuable metals from e-waste through modern technology. This reduces environmental pollution and also reduces the pressure on new raw materials. For this, a government-approved safe recycling system and modern technology are needed.
The government, industrial institutions and the common people must all work together. The government must formulate and implement strict policies on e-waste management. Various institutions must be encouraged to use environmentally friendly technology. At the same time, it is important to strengthen awareness activities through schools, colleges and the media.
Currently, many countries in the world are giving importance to “Green Technology” or environmentally friendly technology. It is possible to reduce the amount of e-waste by creating long-lasting and easily repairable electronic products. At the same time, increasing the use of solar energy and renewable energy-based technologies can also play an important role in protecting the environment.
As the use of smart technology is increasing in agriculture, e-waste is also being generated from old agricultural machinery and electronic sensors. Therefore, along with the use of technology in agriculture, its safe waste management must also be ensured. Especially after using IoT-based agricultural technology, sensors, batteries and digital devices, their proper disposal is essential.
We must remember that the environment is not only the right of the current generation; future generations also have the right to live in a safe and healthy world. If we are not aware of the dangers of e-waste today, then agriculture, nature and humanity will have to pay the price in the future.
E-waste is not ordinary garbage; it is a silent poison. In addition to taking advantage of technology, we must also be aware of its harmful aspects. If every person behaves responsibly, properly segregates e-waste and participates in recycling, then this crisis can be reduced to a large extent.
Now is the time to be aware, make family and society aware and ensure environmentally friendly e-waste management. Because a safe environment means safe agriculture, safe food and a healthy future.
