Real Madrid beat Barcelona to sign 19-year-old midfielder Sergio Martínez

Real Madrid have completed the signing of 19-year-old Racing Santander midfielder Sergio Martínez, beating interest from Barcelona and several other European clubs to secure the highly rated Spanish prospect on a contract until 2030.

Martínez, who stands 1.88 metres tall, will initially join Real Madrid Castilla, the club’s reserve side, while also having opportunities to train with the first team. Real Madrid have paid the €3 million release clause in his contract in a single instalment.

The midfielder attracted interest from several clubs after making his first-team breakthrough at Racing. Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, Villarreal and clubs from the Premier League and Saudi Arabia were among those reportedly interested in signing him. Martínez ultimately chose Real Madrid as the next step in his development.

Martínez has been with Racing Santander since the age of 10, progressing through the club’s youth system before making his senior debut. He went on to make 15 first-team appearances and also scored on his La Liga debut against Villarreal after Racing secured promotion to Spain’s top flight.

Racing Santander confirmed the transfer in an official statement, saying Real Madrid had agreed to pay the full amount of the player’s release clause in one payment. The Spanish club also expressed pride in Martínez’s development and wished him success after his departure.

The move represents another long-term investment by Real Madrid in young talent, with Martínez expected to develop with Castilla before potentially earning opportunities with the senior side.
