TÜRKYE UNVEILS COP31 VISION 

Türkiye has formally laid out its roadmap for the COP31 presidency, vowing to turn the global climate summit into a watershed moment for implementation, not just negotiation.

Environment Minister Murat Kurum, Türkiye Minister set to preside over the November conference, outlined a five-priority agenda that balances energy security, industrial transformation, and a just transition�"while putting the brakes on non-recyclable plastics.

Kurum anchored the presidency’s approach in:

What This Means for Industry
Acknowledging that heavy industry accounts for roughly 40 per cent of global emissions, Kurum pledged a structural transformation roadmap for Türkiye’s own industrial base�"aligning with net-zero goals while preserving competitiveness.

The Five Pillars of Transformation
Türkiye's COP31 presidency will rest upon five fundamental priorities that promise to bridge the gap between ambition and implementation:
1. Energy Security as Climate Action �" Recognising that energy security cannot be separated from climate goals, Türkiye will champion policies that simultaneously strengthen supply chains and accelerate decarbonisation.

2. Protecting the Right to Development �" The presidency will ensure that developing nations are not asked to sacrifice their growth aspirations in the name of climate action.

3. A Just Transition �" No worker, community, or nation will be left behind in the shift toward sustainability.

4. Implementation Focus �" Moving beyond promises to tangible, measurable outcomes.

5. Circular Economy Advancement �" With particular emphasis on limiting non-recyclable plastics.

The Türkiye-Australia Partnership
In an unprecedented arrangement, Türkiye will host and coordinate COP31 while Australia leads negotiations. The conference will unfold across Turkey's stunning landscapes, with the main sessions in Antalya and the World Leaders Summit expected in Istanbul �" a city that bridges continents, symbolising the global unity needed to address this existential challenge.

Nearly 200 nations are expected to attend the November summit, where discussions will centre on emission reduction targets, climate finance, adaptation measures, and carbon market rules under the Paris Agreement.

The COP31 presidency's approach will be built on three unwavering principles:
1. Dialogue �" Creating an inclusive platform that strengthens trust and leaves no one behind, 2. Consensus �" Fostering shared responsibility and ownership among nations,  3. Action �" Ensuring decisions translate into credible, measurable implementation on the ground.

A Critical Energy Crossroads
With approximately 70 per cent of global emissions being energy-related, Minister Kurum emphasised that the intersection of energy and climate policies has never been more critical. Recent geopolitical developments have exposed the fragility of energy supply chains, making energy security a strategic imperative.
