Remove all waste from Buriganga banks in 15 days: HC

The High Court on Wednesday ordered the authorities concerned to remove within 15 days all plastic and other waste dumped along the banks of the Buriganga River in Dhaka’s Islambagh, Lalbagh and Kamrangirchar areas.

It also ordered the authorities to submit a compliance report before the court within four weeks.

The HC bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice SM Iftekhar Uddin Mahamud came up with the directives after hearing a petition filed by Human Rights and Peace for Bangladesh (HRPB). 
 
The HRPB filed the petition following a report published in a national daily on August 19.

According to the report, plastic waste and other garbage had been dumped along the Buriganga bank in Islambagh, despite a 2010 High Court judgment directing the authorities to take measures to stop pollution of the river. 

In 2010, the High Court issued several directives in response to a writ petition filed by HRPB seeking measures to prevent pollution of the Buriganga.

The court had prohibited the dumping of plastic and other waste along the riverbank as part of its directives.
