Wife demands dowry, husband files case

A pharmacy owner filed a case in court against his wife, mother-in-law, and her alleged lover, accusing them of physical torture and demanding Tk 4 lakh in dowry to fund the lover's business.
Md Shamim Mia, a resident of the Muradpur area under Kadamtali Police Station, filed the application in the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ashraful Haq on Wednesday (September 2).
After recording the plaintiff's statement, the court directed Kadamtali Police Station to investigate the allegations and submit a report.
The accused under the Dowry Prohibition Act are Shamim Mia's wife Fatema Tuz Zohura, her alleged lover Sheikh Md Imam Hossain, and her mother Shahanaz. Advocate S M Sabuj represented the plaintiff during the hearing.
According to the case statement, Shamim Mia married Fatema Tuz Zohura on December 15, 2016. Following the marriage, Shamim discovered that his wife maintained contact with Imam Hossain based on a pre-marital relationship.
As a medicine trader, Shamim kept business savings at home. He alleged that ohis wife covertly transferred money from those savings to her lover and his mother over time.
When the matter surfaced, his wife continued extracting money under various pretexts to maintain their marriage.
After nearly Tk 4 lakh was transferred over two years, Shamim requested the return of his savings. His wife then admitted to giving the entire sum to her alleged lover and his mother.
On the night of August 20, his wife and mother-in-law demanded a fresh dowry of Tk 4 lakh as business capital for Imam Hossain.
When Shamim refused to pay, they verbally abused him, shoved him onto a bed, and subjected him to physical assault.
