Court summons woman after husband files Tk 25 lakh suit

A man has filed a Tk 25 lakh compensation suit against his wife, alleging that she concealed her previous marriages and divorces and falsely identified herself as unmarried before their marriage.

Uday Jalal Dip filed the case before the Dhaka Third Senior Civil Judge’s Court on Thursday, also seeking a declaration that their marriage and kabinnama (marriage contract) are invalid.

After hearing the case, Judge Khadija Akter issued summons for the defendant.

According to the case statement, Dip's wife Oishi allegedly concealed her previous marriages and presented herself as unmarried. Believing the claim, Dip married her on December 12, 2024, with a dowry of Tk 20 lakh, of which he paid Tk 4.5 lakh.

Dip said he learned on December 30, 2025, that his wife had previously married several times and that he later obtained copies of two of her previous kabinnamas.

He further alleged that after the marriage, he gave her around Tk 30 lakh at different times for the unpaid portion of the dowry, family needs and personal financial difficulties. He also claimed to have given her 8.5 bhori of gold jewellery.
