Dear Sir,
Everyone knows that smoking is harmful to health. Yet smoking in public places continues to increase, exposing non-smokers, particularly children and women, to second-hand exposure. While walking on the streets, we often see smokers indulging in front of those who do not smoke. Unable to protest, many simply endure it and unwillingly inhale cigarette fumes. This can harm children’s health and put them at risk of various diseases.
Smoking has become a curse for society. Although a law exists to control tobacco use, it has not been properly enforced. Under the Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, the fine for smoking in public places has been increased from Tk300 to Tk2,000. The ordinance came into effect after receiving the President’s approval last Tuesday, following a recommendation from the Health Services Division of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
I urge the administration and higher authorities to enforce the law immediately to ensure a healthy life for all.
