Peace deal with Ukraine still possible: Putin

Russian President Vladimir Putin stated that a peace agreement to end the war with Ukraine remains possible, though recent Ukrainian attacks have complicated the initiation of talks.

Putin made the remarks on Thursday (September 3) at an economic forum in Russia's Far East region.

He noted that several countries, including the United States and China, stand ready to facilitate a peace settlement between Russia and Ukraine. However, he emphasized that the ultimate resolution rests directly between Moscow and Kyiv.

"Is there a prospect for peace? In my opinion, yes, certainly there is," Putin stated.

However, he cautioned that Ukrainian strikes on commercial vessels and threats against civilian aircraft create severe obstacles to advancing peace negotiations.

The Russian President described these Ukrainian actions as "state terrorism." Conversely, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that the presence of Ukrainian drones in Russian airspace makes regional air travel hazardous.

Zelenskyy maintained that Ukraine targets only Russian military installations and poses no threat to civilian aircraft.

On Wednesday, Ukraine requested the United Nations civil aviation agency to urge member states to avoid Russian airspace. Ukrainian domestic airspace has remained closed to international civilian flights due to safety concerns since Russia launched its invasion in 2022.
