Soybean oil shortage continues; egg, chicken prices high

Soybean oil supply remains short in Dhaka despite a recent price hike, while egg and chicken prices continue to stay high.
Edible oil marketing companies have been reducing the supply of soybean oil to the retail market for several days amid rising prices in the global market. The Ministry of Commerce approved a Tk 5 increase in the price of bottled soybean oil per liter this week, but the supply shortage has not eased.
A visit to several retail markets in the capital on Friday (September 4) morning found that most shops in Rampura, Badda, Segunbagicha and Shantinagar had no one-liter bottles of soybean oil. However, two-liter and five-liter bottles were available at most shops.
Some grocery shops were also found selling old-price oil at prices above the government-fixed rate. Sugar supply was also low at some shops. Its price has increased by around Tk 10 to Tk 15 per kg over the past two weeks.
The price of bottled soybean oil has been increased from Tk 199 to Tk 204 per litre. The prices of loose soybean and palm oil have remained unchanged.
Meanwhile, egg and chicken prices remain high. A dozen broiler chicken eggs are selling for Tk 150, unchanged from last week. Broiler chicken is selling for Tk 185 to Tk 195 per kg, depending on the area. Sonali chicken is selling for Tk 320 to Tk 340 per kg.
Prices of some vegetables have declined. Ridge gourd is selling for Tk 70 to Tk 80 per kg, snake gourd for Tk 50 to Tk 60, papaya for Tk 30 and local bottle gourd for Tk 50 to Tk 70. Taro is selling for Tk 60 to Tk 70, bitter gourd for Tk 60 to Tk 80, and small pointed gourd and okra for Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kg.
Green chilli prices have fallen to Tk 80 to Tk 120 per kg. Cucumber is selling for Tk 40 to Tk 50. However, yardlong beans, tomatoes, carrots and teasel gourd remain expensive.
Onion prices have also declined slightly. A kilogramme of onions, previously selling for Tk 60 to Tk 65, is now available for Tk 55 to Tk 60.
