Eighth China Ambassador Cup Wushu begins 

 
The eighth China Ambassador Cup Wushu Championship opened in Dhaka on Saturday with 279 athletes from 19 clubs, as Bangladesh seeks to strengthen its grassroots pipeline and improve its prospects on the international stage.

The two-day tournament, organised by the Bangladesh Wushu Federation under the patronage of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh, was inaugurated at the Shaheed Suhrawardi Indoor Stadium in Mirpur by former home and commerce minister Air Vice Marshal (retd) Altaf Hossain Chowdhury, MP.

Chinese Embassy Cultural Counsellor Li Shaopeng attended the opening ceremony as a special guest, while federation president Saiful Islam Bhuiyan presided.

"Bringing players through from the grassroots is the main objective of this competition," federation general secretary Md Dildar Hasan Dilu told the gathering.

Dilu said the federation was pursuing a long-term strategy to win medals in international competitions, with Bangladesh scheduled to host the South Asian Junior Wushu Championship next January as part of those efforts.

Altaf said sport could help young people develop discipline and lead orderly lives, while highlighting wushu's potential contribution to their physical and mental well-being.

The championship will conclude on Sunday, when Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque is expected to attend the closing and prize-giving ceremony.
