RAB tries to pick up JnU student, university intervenes

Jagannath University teachers and proctorial staff prevented individuals claiming to be RAB personnel from detaining a female student from her mess in Dhaka's Koltabazar on Sunday morning.

The incident occurred on Sunday (September 6) morning in a female student mess located on Johnson Road in Koltabazar under Sutrapur Police Station.

According to university authorities, several individuals entered the mess posing as Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members to arrest a suspect in a theft case. They subsequently placed Barsha Khatun, a student of the Theatre Department from the 2015-16 session, inside a RAB vehicle.

Upon receiving the news, university teachers, students, and proctorial team members rushed to the spot and objected to detaining the student without informing university administration.

Faced with strong resistance, the officials released the student and left the scene without taking her into custody.

Jagannath University Assistant Proctor Ahmed Ehsanul Kabir confirmed the intervention, stating that student safety remains their primary obligation and any legal process must follow proper administrative procedures.

Transport Administrator Professor Md Tarek Bin Atiq noted that the incident appeared linked to a personal family dispute involving the student's former brother-in-law.

Sutrapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Anwar confirmed that the personnel belonged to RAB, adding that the attempt was tied to a family dispute case and the student was released at the scene.
