EU seeks level playing field in public procurement

The European Union has called for a level playing field for companies from all countries in Bangladesh’s public procurement process, stressing that decisions should be based on commercial merit.
EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Mike Miller made the remarks at a meeting on Bangladesh-EU trade and economic relations at the Ministry of Commerce on Sunday.
He said all companies should be able to compete on an equal footing in public procurement and that decisions should be made on the basis of commercial merit.
“This will ensure the best use of Bangladeshi taxpayers’ money,” Miller said.
He described Airbus’s proposal as “highly competitive” and said it should be given serious consideration. He also expressed hope that negotiations between Airbus and Biman Bangladesh Airlines would conclude soon.
The meeting discussed various challenges to Bangladesh-EU trade and economic relations and steps already taken or being considered by the Bangladesh government to address them.
Miller said continued EU engagement with different ministries in Bangladesh would require political commitment and investment of time. He described the EU as a reliable partner for Bangladesh amid growing pressure on the rules-based international system.
“We believe in the rule of law, fair and transparent processes and multilateralism,” he said.
The EU’s cooperation with Bangladesh aims to support the government’s efforts, strengthen state institutions and deepen bilateral relations for future prosperity, he said, noting that Bangladesh is facing several challenges, including a smooth graduation from least developed country status.
The meeting also discussed removing non-tariff barriers. Miller said such efforts would benefit both Bangladeshi and European businesses by promoting transparency, fair competition and non-discrimination.
The EU also wants to support Bangladesh’s green and digital transitions, he said.
