Tk 97.03 lakh recovered, three arrested over factory cash theft

Police have arrested three people, including a garment factory driver, and recovered Tk 97.03 lakh within 48 hours of Tk 1 crore being allegedly stolen from the chairman’s car in Narayanganj.

Industrial Police-2, Gazipur, Superintendent Mohammad Amzad Hossain disclosed the information at a press briefing at the unit’s office on Saturday.

According to police, the chairman of Lavender Fashion, a garment factory in Rajendrapur, Gazipur, was travelling to Dhaka with Tk 1 crore in cash for workers’ salaries and other factory expenses on September 1.

Around 7pm, he stopped in front of Purbachal Cadet Club in Rupganj, Narayanganj. Taking advantage of the opportunity, his personal driver Zahid Hasan allegedly fled with the cash.

Zahid later sent an apologetic message to the factory owner before going into hiding.

Following a case filed with Rupganj Police Station, Industrial Police-2 launched a parallel investigation and conducted raids in Dhaka, Gazipur and Jhenaidah with assistance from the Jhenaidah District Detective Branch.

Zahid, 30, was arrested in Jhenaidah and Tk 86 lakh was recovered from his residence, police said.

His alleged accomplice Aktaruzzaman, 51, was also arrested and Tk 1.03 lakh was recovered from him. Aktaruzzaman’s wife, Nasima Akter, 24, was later arrested from her residence in Tongi, and police recovered another Tk 10 lakh from her.

Police said Zahid spent around Tk 1.20 lakh of the stolen money on renting a new house and purchasing furniture. He also bought a mobile phone for Tk 33,000. The furniture and phone were recovered during the operation.

“Industrial Police-2 is always vigilant to protect the industrial and investment environment and prevent industry-related crimes. We were able to arrest the main accused within 48 hours and recover a large portion of the stolen money,” Amzad Hossain said.

The three arrested people, along with the recovered money and other items, were handed over to Rupganj Police Station, where the case was filed.
