In a tragic turn of events, an elderly man suffers a stroke while taking bath in a pond, his grandchildren die trying to save him.
An elderly man and his grandson and granddaughter drowned in a pond in Lakshmipur. The deceased were identified as Abu Siddique (70), his grandson Piyas (8) and granddaughter Popi Akter (6). Locals said that the two children died while trying to save their grandfather Abu Siddique.
The accident occurred on Sunday (September 6) afternoon in the pond at Ibrahim Patwari's house in Shakchar area of Ward No. 6 of Shakchar Union of Sadar Upazila.
The deceased Abu Siddique Patwari is the son of Abdul Mannan Patwari of Ibrahim Patwari's house in Shakchar Union of Sadar Upazila. The deceased Piyas is the son of his (Siddique) son Abdul Aziz and Popi is the son of his daughter Sumi Akter.
Locals said that Abu Siddique went to bathe in the pond in front of the house with his two grandchildren. Later, the elderly man went into the water and drowned. But he did not come out of the water for a long time.
At one stage, grandson Piyas and granddaughter Poppy drowned while searching for him in the water. Locals recovered their bodies about an hour after the incident.
It is believed that Abu Siddique had a stroke after diving into the water. Due to which he could not get up even after diving. His grandchildren also drowned while trying to save him.
Mehedi Hasan Faruk, a member of Ward No. 1 of Shakchar Union Parishad, said that three people from the same family have died. The incident is very sad.
Wahid Parvez, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Lakshmipur Sadar Model Police Station, said, I have heard about the incident. It is very sad. Police have been sent to the scene.
Necessary legal action will be taken after talking to the family in this incident.
