13-year-old dies after alleged wrong treatment in Noakhali

A 13-year-old boy died after allegedly receiving wrong treatment at a private eye hospital in Noakhali city, prompting the civil surgeon to order its closure.

The deceased was identified as Mohammad Moslem. He sustained an eye injury while playing with his peers on Saturday afternoon and was taken to Islamia Eye Hospital in Datterhat on the advice of a local doctor.

According to the boy’s relatives, hospital physician Abul Hossain administered three injections into Moslem’s eye, after which he became unconscious. The physician allegedly advised the family to take him to Noakhali General Hospital and tried to leave.

The relatives then took the child to the general hospital along with the physician, where doctors declared Moslem dead.

Abul Hossain said he had administered small amounts of medicine to the boy’s upper and lower eyelids to examine his cornea. He said the child suddenly developed convulsions afterwards.

Following the complaint, Noakhali Civil Surgeon Anwar Hossain visited the hospital on Saturday night and ordered its closure.

“We will look into the matter through an investigation and examine all aspects before reaching an overall conclusion,” the civil surgeon said.

Hossain, who is in police custody, claimed that he is a diploma-holding senior optometrist and also the hospital’s managing director.

The hospital was also closed in 2024 due to an alleged lack of a suitable medical environment, according to the report.
