Battery rickshaws set for digital registration

The government is preparing to regulate battery-powered auto-rickshaws through digital registration instead of banning them.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said each vehicle would receive a QR code and digital tracking facility.

The system will prevent several vehicles from operating under a single registration number.

The government will also replace lead-acid batteries with environment-friendly alternatives and introduce area-based movement rules.

Speaking in Parliament on Monday, MP Rehana Akhter Ranu said AI traffic cameras had reduced several road violations in Dhaka.

However, she said battery-powered rickshaws continued to operate without following traffic rules. Their lack of number plates also makes enforcement difficult.

Ranu called for registration, number plates, driver licences and training instead of a ban.

Salahuddin said 50 to 80 lakh electric three-wheelers were operating across the country. They consume around 5 per cent of total electricity generation.

He said Dhaka had about 48,000 informal or illegal charging points, while illegal connections caused an estimated Tk 4,000 crore annual revenue loss.

He also cited environmental pollution from lead-acid batteries and unsafe recycling.

According to the minister, 9,011 people died in 6,729 road accidents in 2025. Battery-powered auto-rickshaws were involved in 13.54 per cent of those accidents.

The government is also taking action against illegal charging points and restricting the vehicles on major roads.

Ranu proposed inner-road operation, solar charging facilities, BRTA registration and zoning.

Salahuddin said the Local Government Division had already finalised the necessary policy.

The policy provides for digital registration, QR codes and tracking. It also requires environment-friendly batteries.
